Temporo Mandibular Joint Disorder

TMJ massage is an effective treatment for clients who suffer from TMJ dysfunction. This modality is used in conjunction with massage techniques for the face, scalp and neck muscles that affect jaw alignment and tension. In some cases Latex-free gloves are worn while working inside the mouth to release the muscles and fascia involved in chewing and jaw clenching. Other possible benefits of TMJ Massage include:

  • Increased movement in the jaw and neck as the massage relaxes the muscles and removes pain associated with movement.
  • Reduced frequency and strength of headaches through improved circulation and relief of muscle tension.
  • Pain relief as the massage releases muscle tension and contraction by stretching the fascia.
  • Increases circulation which softens fascia, cleanses tissues and promotes healing.
  • May result in relief from muscular and structural TMJ.

Clients can learn how to work on themselves to provide relief when needed. Diseases and disorders of this joint (referred to as TMJD) are characterized by pain in the jaw and surrounding tissues and limitations in jaw movements. Symptoms of TMJ dysfunction may include jaw clicking and locking, headaches, sensitive teeth, ringing in the ears, pain in the neck, shoulders and back.
